With spending cuts throughout the Public and Private sector many organisations are investigating ways to reduce storage costs when the time comes to replace, upgrade or renew support on legacy fibre channel solutions.
A spending review often acts as a catalyst to prompt enterprise storage users to investigate more 'cost effective' technologies such as iSCSI which may have been disregarded the last time a review was carried out - perhaps due to internal policy or simply through limited visibility of what was available in the marketplace.
The reality is that an iSCSI storage platform such as EqualLogic not only offers an extremely valid alternative to Fibre Channel, it will often bring with it powerful tools and features which were outside even those six and seven figure budgets the last time around. EqualLogic's fully inclusive licensing model means that all features are included in the purchase price of the array. Even features on the roadmap are included as long as a support agreement is maintained. Support usually costs less than £1500 per year. Surprised?
I've lost count of the times I've visited a legacy fibre channel user to promote the benefiits of the EqualLogic platform and been met with a blank expression when I've begun to discuss storage virtualisation, intelligent snapshotting tools, replication and thin provisioning. Surely they've been using those features for years given their very substantial investment in their storage estate over time? Not very often - usually they've purchased a very expensive box of disks and gone without the enhanced features because of the purchase and ongoing support costs. The fund holders have been happy because they've seen the EMC / HP EVA / IBM / insert name here badges on the stack and the long-standing IT manager has settled back into his role comfortable in the knowledge that 'No-one ever got fired for buying...."
What about bandwidth into the array? 'Can iSCSI over Gigabit Ethernet really compete with my four or eight gigs of fibre channel?' The truth is that we have never come across a situation where the bandwidth into an EqualLogic storage pool has even been remotely taxed, let alone had a negative effect on performance.
One of the things I like most about selling EqualLogic is that there are not many environments I've come across where the platform will not present significant savings, alongside improved performance and features, when replacement storage or support renewal for a legacy platform is on the agenda.
