Dell continue development of the successful EqualLogic iSCSI SAN platform with the release of the PS6100 series - delivering increased performance, higher capacity and greater flexibility through the application of Dells innovative 'fluid data' technology.
The PS6100 series arrays, as were the PS6000 series appliances before them, are designed to meet the performance and availability demands of virtual environments in medium to large organisations. Flexible configurations, combined with the well documented EqualLogic scale-out architecture and fully inclusive licensing model has enabled Dell to become, and remain the established market leader in iSCSI storage.
Key changes to the range with the introduction of the PS6100 series include:
- Choice of either 2.5" or 3.5" drives in a 2U or 4U form factor
- PS6100E - 24 X 3.5" 500GB / 1TB / 2TB / 3TB 7.2K NL SAS Drives, delivering up to 72TB in a single appliance
- PS6100X - 24 X 2.5" 300GB / 600GB / 900GB 10K SAS Drives, delivering up to 21.6TB of performance storage
- PS6100XV - 24 X 2.5" 146GB / 300GB 15K SAS Drives, delivering up to 7.2TB of high-performance storage
- PS6100XV 3.5 - 24 X 3.5" 600GB 15K SAS Drives, delivering up to 14.4TB of high-performance storage
- PS6100S - 24 X 2.5" 200GB / 400GB SSD Drives, delivering up to 9.6TB of low-latency, high-performance storage
- PS6100XS - hybrid array featuring a mix of SSD and 10K SAS for optimal responsiveness across tiered workloads
It is clear that increased controller cache and higher spindle count will lead to new EqualLogic performance highs. The introduction of larger 3TB 7.2k NL SAS, 600GB 10K/15K SAS and 900GB 10K SAS drives means that single-appliance capacities have now grown in line with the sprawling data estates of users.
The introduction of EqualLogic firmware version 5.1 ensures these new arrays will benefit from more efficient automated storage management and enhanced load balancing both within the arrays (in the case of the hybrid PS6100XS appliance) and between different tiers in the storage pool. This means that 'hot' data will automatically migrate to lower-latency, high performance disk and 'cooler' or archive data to higher capacity, low cost storage. This has always been a feature of the EqualLogic range, ongoing development (and no doubt Dells acquistion of Compellent) has significantly enhanced both performance and granularity.
The PS6100 series looks set to strengthen Dells position as the market leader in low cost SAN storage. The extensive enterprise feature set and predictable ongoing costs associated with both support and product development make this a simple choice for any organisation looking for the best value iSCSI SAN. |
