The PS5000X series iSCSI SAN arrays are based upon either Eight or Sixteen 400GB 10K Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives, with total raw capacity ranging from 3.2 to 6.4TB. Data is striped across all drives within the array to achieve the optimum combination of performance and capacity. 10K SAS disk features enhanced performance, whilst still offering high capacity.
The RAID level within the appliance can be RAID 10 (high performance, reduced capacity) RAID 50 (good performance, good capacity) or RAID 5 (capacity optimised). In an eight disk array there will be one hot-spare drive, in a sixteen disk array there will be two. All drives are subject to an extended burn-in process before sale, leading to a reduced DOA failure rate.
As with all PS Series arrays, the PS5000X benefits from the full hardware redundancy and the fully inclusive licensing model - see PS Series Overvew for further details.
Numerous real-world capacity planning exercises and production deployments have demonstrated to us that the PS5000X array can comfortably and reliably support multi-server physical and virtual environments, which may include some high transactional workloads.
