The PS5000E series iSCSI SAN arrays are based upon either Eight or Sixteen 7.2K SATA2 disk drives, with total raw capacity ranging from 2 to 16TB. All drives within the array must be the same size, data is striped across all drives within the array to achieve the optimum combination of performance and capacity. Whilst you may not necessarily consider SATA disk for deployment as direct attached storage within servers, it is important to remember that the way in which disks are utilised within a PS Series array is fundamentally different and an exceptional level of performance and reliability can be achieved.
The RAID level within the appliance can be RAID 10 (high performance, reduced capacity) RAID 50 (good performance, good capacity) or RAID 5 (capacity optimised). All drives are subject to an extended burn-in process before sale, leading to a reduced DOA failure rate. RAID 6 (double parity) support has also been introduced with a recent firmware update.
As with all PS Series arrays, the PS5000E benefits from the full hardware redundancy and the fully inclusive licensing model - see PS Series Overvew for further details.
Numerous real-world capacity planning exercises and production deployments have demonstrated to us that the PS5000E array can comfortably and reliably support multi-server physical and virtual environments.
