The EqualLogic PS6100X iSCSI SAN appliance is based upon a new chassis design which can accommodate up to twenty four 2.5" 10K SAS disks. 300GB, 600GB and 900GB drive options can be utilised to deliver up to 21.6TB of fast (RAW) capacity. High performance disks, together with the high spindle count means that IOPs performance significantly exceeds that delivered by the capacity optimised PS6100E. This means the the PS6100X is suitable for use with demanding databases and virtual environments containing a large number of workloads. Careful sizing and planning is of course important, and is more straightforward with PS6100 series appliances (in comparison with the PS4000/PS4100 series) with support for more iSCSI connections, more volumes, more replicas etc.
Performance and Capacity Optimisation
The appliance can be purchased full or half populated. Storage is virtualised across all drives in the array (with the exception of those allocated as hot spares), so the more disks you have, the better the performance. The decision on which RAID level to be applied across the pool should be based upon the performance/capacity mix required for your workloads. RAID 10 offers maximum performance and can withstand multiple drive failures, yet it delivers the least space. RAID 50 offers a capacity increase with relatively little sacrifice in throughput and has proved to be the most common choice amongst our users. Use of RAID 6 and RAID 5 is less common due to concerns in relation to speed and resilience respectively.
Tiered Storage Architecture
The PS6100X can be deployed as part of a 'storage pool' in conjunction with any current or previous generation EqualLogic array. Whilst all disks within each appliance must be of the same size/type, there is no need to match disk technologies or capacities within a storage pool - indeed the EqualLogic architecture is designed to deliver tiered pools of storage with fully automated migration of data between tiers. The PS6100X is undoubtedly a very positive step forward, based upon an already-successful product range. This high capacity, high performance iSCSI storage option is sure to be well received by new and existing users alike.
