The EqualLogic PS4100XV iSCSI SAN appliances deliver high throughput and strong random IOPs to demanding workloads. In line with the other PS4100 series arrays, the PS4100XV is designed for deployment in small to medium enterprises, branch offices and for dedicated project use. As with all other arrays and generations of EqualLogic storage it can be deployed as a single standalone appliance, or as part of a larger, tiered storage pool with other arrays from the range.

Fastest PS4100 Series Array

The PS4100XV is based upon high performance 15K SAS disk. Capacity has traditionally been a challenge in this space, with limited availability of higher capacity drives leading to a ceiling on the overall array size. In the case of the PS4100XV Dell has addressed this by offering appliances utilising both 2.5" and 3.5" disk (the PS4100XV and the PS4100XV 3.5" respectively). The PS4100XV is once again based upon the new 24 drive chassis with options for 146GB or 300GB 2.5" disks. The high spindle count in the 24-drive array means that this will be the fastest box in the PS4100 series, in conjunction with the additional controller cache you could see up to 60% performance increase on previous generations. The PS4100XV 3.5" as the name suggests, utilises 12 higher capacity 600GB 3.5" drives to deliver up to 7.2GB of RAW storage. It is reasonable to assume that the capacity of each option will increase as larger 15K drives become available, and perhaps that the 3.5" option may make way for the 2.5" in the longer term when manufacturing processes allow more space to be crammed into the smaller form factor. In the meantime it's refreshing to see that Dell have covered all the bases.

Enterprise Features and Reliability

As with all other appliances in the EqualLogic range, the PS4100XV is built upon fault tolerant hardware which is able to withstand controller and/or multiple disk failures with negligible performance impact. The fully inclusive licensing model delivers enterprise features including thin provisioning, application consistent snapshots, VMware vSphere integration, replication, detailed reporting tools and more. The EqualLogic management interface is widely accepted to be one of the most powerful and user-friendly in this space, supported by the exceptional uptake and ongoing positive feedback.
