The EqualLogic PS4100X appliance is a radical step forward when compared with it's predecessor the PS4100X. For a long time 10K SAS disk has provided a significant step up from entry-level SATA (now NL-SAS) disk, offering approximately double the IOPs performance for a relatively small uplift in cost. Capacity has traditionally been lower than it's fat SATA cousin due to restrictions on the size of 10K SAS disks. This meant that an organisation that required both performance and capacity may have to consider multiple, or alternative appliances if their data capacity exceeds 3-4TB (taking into account reserved space for snapshots, replication and growth).
Performance and Capacity
The new EqualLogic PS4100X is based upon space-efficient 2.5" 10K SAS disk, with up to 24 drives in a single 2U chassis. Larger drive sizes are now also available with a choice of 300GB 600GB and 900GB disks. This combined means that we now have an appliance that offers blistering performance (due to both fast 10K SAS disk and the higher 'spindle count') together with serious capacity (exceeding 21TB RAW if fully populated with 900GB drives) making this a force to be reckoned with in the iSCSI storage space. PS4100X pricing is also extremely competitive, especially when the value delivered by the fully inclusive licensing model is taken into account.
Virtual Environments
Dell EqualLogic storage is predominantly deployed as part of a virtual environment. An EqualLogic appliance based upon twenty four 10K RPM SAS disks could comfortably accommodate a small to medium sized virtual environment, including some demanding workloads. Based upon my experience I would not be surprised to see 30 to 40 workloads (depending upon size and composition of course) comfortably accommodated by a single appliance, with the added benefit of seamless scale-out expansion as and when the need for further growth is required.
There are of course design considerations when deploying larger estates based upon EqualLogic PS4100 / PS4000 kit. That's where expert consultants fit in. If you'd like to speak with an experienced Dell Equallogic Reseller get in touch.
