The Dell EqualLogic PS 4000 series could be considered an entry level iSCSI SAN appliance, however it's excellent performance and comprehensive feature set makes it a perfect SAN storage platform for small to medium sized server estates and virtual environments. The low price point also makes it an ideal choice for project work or branch offices.
Scaling and performance of the PS4000 series has been adjusted in line with it's price point, although the user is still left with a much stronger feature set than you receive with many higher end arrays - including storage virtualisation, snapshots, replication, volume groups and more. It is also important to consider that all featured caps are removed when a PS4000 array shares a storage pool with a legacy PS Series array, a PS5000 series or a PS6000 series unit.
The same disk technologies are present (with the exception of SSD) so the familiar naming conventions apply - PS4000E (SATA), PS4000X (10K SAS), PS4000XV (15K SAS)

A quick comparison between the PS4000 series and the PS6000 is shown in the table below, as the table shows it's still a very powerful box and sure to bring cost effective iSCSI SAN storage within reach of many more users.

*PS4000 series appliances can be placed in a storage group with PS5000/PS6000 series appliances, in which case the restriction on overall group size is relaxed, however only two PS4000 units may exist in any one group.
